Jay found this event he wanted to see in Christchurch, and we happily went with him! It was called SailGP, and it’s an event held in several locations where 9 teams from different countries compete using identical boats on specified courses. The boats don’t look like anything we’ve ever seen! They are F50 boats, created for this sort of racing.
The event was super well organized. Spectators all took buses from downtown Christchurch to the event, and the organizers had lots of buses! The mood was festive and cheerful – obviously lots of support and cheering for the NZ team which did really well in this event and overall in the multi-event competition. The next event is in San Francisco!
It was a great day, following by a great meal at a Thai restaurant just 5 minutes walk from our hotel.
