El Médano

The town we’re staying in is called El Médano, which is kind of off the beaten tourist track, seemingly peopled by many expats but not that many short term tourists. It has a decidedly relaxed vibe, not unlike Mexico but much more European put together, and enough restaurants, bars, and other diversions. It’s unusual to hear American English (we heard one today, who lives in Germany with her husband but is American), but you certainly hear plenty of English people, as well as Germans and Spanish. Mostly, Spanish as this is their country. There’s a lot of boardwalks and beach paths that are available for ambling along, extending to fairly long distance walks along the beach and cliffs from town to town. In the background of some shots below is a hill called Montaña Roja (Red Mountain) that we plan to climb in the next few days as our feet get better.

Since this is a volcanic island, the beaches have black sand, although some of the more of the upper-end resort beaches have white sand that was brought from another place, probably halfway around the world. Crazy stuff, right? As you can see, the beaches are not very crowded, and it doesn’t take much to get away from people to get some space and quiet. These shots are at the most crowded beach in town! The water is super clear and clean.
