One of the places we’ve wanted to visit is Los Gigantes. We saw the tops of Los Gigantes during our hike above Masca, but the beach and town named after the cliffs are big tourist attractions so we wanted to go. We are only hiking every other day due to our foot issues, so each non-hiking day we figure out something that we want to do. The main feature at Los Gigantes are giant rock cliffs, Acantilados de Los Gigantes, that rise vertically from the sea to a height of 500-800 metres. Los Gigantes means “The Giants” and they are not kidding – spectacular! Once we arrived, we parked and then almost immediately passed booths selling boat rides to see dolphins and/or whales and this sounded great – perfect for a day off. But first…lunch! Salad with some sort of cheese and octopus over a bed of creamy mashed potatoes. Really good! And a beer. 🙂
The boat ride costs €25 each (about $27.50 USD) and we’re sold. We had lunch and then headed to the pick up spot. The dolphins were fun to see and then the boat headed to Masca Beach, where boats come to pick up hikers lucky enough to be able to hike the Masca Gorge, which does not include us this trip. The hike is only available on weekends and bank holidays, and the number of hikers is strictly controlled. So the first day we could find was in late May. Bummer but there’s lots of other hikes to do!

The cliffs are amazing to see from the sea, we enjoyed the chill atmosphere of the boat ride. See if you can see the trail on the cliffs in the last picture. That trail connects to a tunnel that is drilled though the cliff – takes 20-30 minutes to get through it from this side to the exit and it’s pitch black. Not for the faint of heart and not on our list this trip.
