We left Roscoff at about 10 AM this morning, and went past the lighthouse which is the official starting point of the EuroVelo routes 1, 4 and 7. We are taking the EV4 east as far as Mont St. Michel, and then taking some other Velo routes to explore Brittany to the south and southwest coast. Today we rode about 45 miles (including a 5-mile oops we made by taking a wrong turn, and a 4-mile trip to/from the grocery store) from Roscoff to Plougasnou, with about 3,000 ft of elevation gain.

The vélo route we are taking is kind of amazing. I didn’t exactly know what to expect, but it was better than I expected: very scenic, quiet, well signposted, had gpx tracks for my phone, and was a great mixture of small untrafficked paved roads, dirt roads, gravel tracks and single tracks. Super well done.
The maps below show the French part of the euro vélo, with details of Brittany and where we are starting our ride. The entire network crosses all of Europe.

For the first part of the ride, we went from Roscoff to Morlaix and stopped there for lunch. Then, we rode up the coast to Plougasnou. The estuaries are super long and the sea is never far from view. When we got to the hotel, the guy upgraded our reservation for some reason so we have a huge room facing the sea. Really nice!

So first day of riding was great. Tomorrow we’ll probably do some hiking around the coast and then go out somewhere nice I’ve found for Chris’ 60th birthday. 🥰
