On to Regensburg, via boat?

It’s about 70 miles from Neuberg an der Danau where we stayed a couple nights ago to Regensburg where we are this evening. In the middle, we stopped in Neustadt an der Danau, in one of the cleanest campsites we have yet encountered, taking the clean crown from a Swiss campsite near Lake Constance. And Chris loves clean so she notices these things! It was beautiful. Last night was Sunday so we went out and enjoyed a Bavarian meal in a local restaurant. Sunday means that basically all the markets and stores are closed.

Today we rode the last 35 miles into Regensburg. We found out this morning that there is a ferry ride as part of the route! But first we passed seeming miles of hops being grown. In about 10km we arrived at the ferry landing but there was no ferry and it seemed pretty quiet.

Ferry landing not looking too good

It’s hard to figure things out when you don’t speak or read German. But we asked someone and got the message that the ferry (which was running the previous day!) could not operate due to low water levels! Damn! So we resigned ourselves to a slog over some steep hills to get where we needed to go and headed back, only to see some people standing by the bank of the river like they were going to be picked up. So we walked our bikes across the stone beach and there was indeed a boat – a small flat bottomed punt – coming to ferry people. We got on! Along with 6 people and as many bikes we made our way along the river, the operator telling us all the interesting facts about the canyon and the river, none of which we could understand. The ride was beautiful!

  1. Looks beautiful! Huh! I don’t know if I could ride a zillion miles like you two, but you sure are seeing some beautiful landscape, food and wine!!
