In Austria! We’ve crossed Germany!

Today, we crossed into Austria! We’ve entered the last phase of our trip, with less than 2 weeks left. It’s kind of amazing to think that we’ll be in Bratislava in only a few days.

It’s a big, ah… change to stay in a 4-level apartment with its own elevator and then begin camping again in a tiny 2-person tent. But we sort of like it, and so everything went well in our transition from luxury to spartan living. We slept like babes in our tent, despite the music from the nearby festival. Europeans have a lot of holidays and festivals!

Waking in Deggendorf to silent kayakers on the Danube

The last couple days we rode 104 miles, battling a steady headwind yesterday and getting our first rain showers during the ride. Tomorrow we expect some more rain for a bit, as rain finally seems to be coming to ease the dry conditions. We have rain gear!

Regensburg to Deggendorf to Obernszell: 104 miles

Today demanded a coffee and cake stop! The ladies were charming and the cakes were great. Not quite the best of the trip but we need to keep trying.

Coming through Passau, Germany, we thought about staying for the night. It’s looks great and we thought about “next time” we might be in the area. So many places to see and visit, and yet … we moved through. Many river cruise boats dot the shores and we think about Beryl and wonder if she was here.

As we begin to leave Germany the landscape becomes less industrial almost immediately. Our destination tomorrow is Linz in Austria and so we chose a town about 50 miles from Linz to camp called Obernzell, to make it to Linz tomorrow comfortably in one day. But the town of Obernzell is on one side of the river and our campsite in the other. Luckily there’s a ferry!! For €2.50 we took the ferry across with the other 8 cyclists (cars are allowed but there are only cyclists on this ride). It’s a short crossing and then we get to the campground which has nice green grass and clean showers. We chat with a very nice Albanian woman and her son over dinner and go to bed. The world and its people are cool.
