Last day in DC – Bike ride, anyone?

I suppose it’s a sign of possible obsession that we decided to ride our bikes up the C&O trail from DC, when we could have done a million other things in our nation’s capital. But…it kind of made sense. We were worried about leaving our bikes outside of a museum while we went inside, so riding them seemed like a good compromise. And honestly, we missed being on our bikes.

In addition, we had missed the last section of the C&O since we took a different path from Leesburg, and so it was nice to leave and come back into Washington DC using the method we had originally planned. We rode about 30+ miles, and it felt good to be out and under the sky instead of inside.

30 miles on our last day

Our friends John and Terri boarded an Amtrak going back to Chicago at 4PM as we pedaled back into Georgetown. We were a bit hungry in advance of getting on a train to Princeton and so we found a food truck on the mall, bought some street food and ate on a park bench. I think I caught some people looking at us with pity for our obvious “homeless condition”, and I got some silent amusement from it. At least no one came over offering us spare change. 🙂

Our fancy restaurant for lunch

After our lunch, we rode the last few miles to Union Station and waited for our train to Princeton. Getting on, we struggled finding the right place to put our bikes…American trains are not really set up for bikes like those in Europe. But…we got them hung in the appropriate places eventually and the train sped up to Princeton on schedule. Chris’ long-time friend Susan and her husband Marc met us at the station in two cars, one each for a bike and us. What luxury.

After a glass or two of wine and some conversation, I fell deeply to sleep while Chris and Susan chatted into the night, and woke 10 hours later. Tomorrow is another day!
