We are on the last push to the end. We did our second consecutive day of over 100 km, which we had never done before. Some of it is that we are generally going downhill from Mossburn to Bluff (Invercargill is about 20 miles from Bluff), and also that we are so close that we want to get to the end.
The landscape from Mossburn to Invercargill is pretty flat and uneventful. Gone are the soaring peaks and glistening lakes….replaced by fields bordered by tall windbreak trees and dense shrubs on the sides of the roads. It clearly is windy down here.
This was a long day, helped the first 40 miles by a brisk and steady tailwind. It seemed like it was going to be a short day.
We stopped in a little town called Winton along the way to have coffee and a snack, breaking up the journey.
Then, the wind shifted and we had 25 miles of headwind, finally arriving to Invercargill and our hotel. We stopped at a liquor store to buy some refreshments post-ride and ordered some Indian takeout for dinner. Tomorrow, we’ll do the last 20 miles to Bluff and be done! And then we’ll start the next chapter of this trip. 🙂
