Invercargill Transport Museum

Before leaving Invercargill, we spent the morning at the famous Phil Richardson transport museum there, which has an AMAZING collection of cars, trucks, gas pumps, and other memorabilia related to cars and trucks.

Jay is a big car fan, but we also enjoyed the amazing collection. It’s hard to really focus on anything specific there, since the collection is so diverse and extensive. But it’s awe inspiring and beautiful. Of interest to me was all the gas pumps, which underlined that when cars began being manufactured and distributed, at the same time all sorts of other stuff had to be made available at the same time. One of the obvious ones was gasoline, and it obviously took a few iterations to arrive at what we know as gas pumps today.

Anyway, from a novice at this, I’ll just post some pictures, and I hope you enjoy.

I guess this is my car! I was born in 1954 too.
And this friend of the founder did the north to south bike ride on a 1940 vintage bike he found in a ditch.

    Wondering if you went into the big hardware store down the street that also doubled as a motorcycle museum? Burt Munro (The World’s Fastest Indian with Anthony Hopkins tells the story) who held the fastest land-speed record for decades was from Invercargill and they feature some of his bikes there. The town also hosts a motorcycle rally/festival every year where motorcycles come from all over the country to participate and they do speed trials on the beach where Burt tested his bikes as one of the events.

    Hi Anna, we did not go to the motorcycle museum. The ticket to the transport museum included entry but we spent so long in the transport museum, there was no time. Next trip!! 😜
