A short day in wind and rain: St. Michel-Chef-Chef to Les Moutiers-en-Retz

Today’s forecast was for strong wind from the WSW, up to 30MPH steady, accompanied by rain. So, we decided to make it a short day, fighting the headwind in the morning and then enjoying a bit of tailwind in the afternoon but avoiding going too far. We ended up staying in the small town of Les Moutier-en-Retz, finding an expensive but well-situated campsite and having dinner in a lovely small restaurant there.

Headwind in the morning, sidewind in the afternoon, and stopping before heading into the wind again!
A short day of riding, ending in sun!

We stopped for a bit in Les Moutiers-en-Retz and decided that made a great place to find a resting spot for the night. We are just about to enter the Marais Breton, which is sparsely populated area that is a reclaimed marsh/swamp that crisscrossed by water channels and ponds, where lodging and camping are not plentiful. The sun came out while we were having a drink, surrounded by dozens of other soggy bike tourists.

Blue skies arrive! Lovely

And so, the decision was made, and it was a good one! The only rub was that there was a festival in the town square that night, which was close to our campground. It was setting up as we got settled into the campground. The music played into the night but we slept well, intermittently woken by revelers coming home in the wee hours.

We had a really nice dinner in town at a small restaurant that was packed to the gills with people. In August, it’s important to make reservations.
