Into Segovia on the last day of cycling for 10 days

Today is our last day of cycling for about 10 days. After we cycle into Seville, we’ll take the train to Madrid, and then meet up with Chris’ sister Katherine and brother-in-law Andrew there, plus have a day with John, an old friend from Boulder that happens to passing through Madrid while we are there too! We’ll take up cycling again in Cordoba, and depending on weather and our whims, either explore Andalusia or head west towards the coast of Portugal.

SepĂşlveda to Segovia

So we’ll savor this last day of cycling into Segovia. It’s a great day, and the riding is super. Again, really small roads with virtually no traffic, but also no villages big enough to get a coffee until we got to Santo Domingo de Pirón, where we ran into a lovely English guy named Mike Gardner at a cafe and spent 40 minutes with chatting away. He’s been living in Spain about 10 years now, a retired journalist that also has written a number of books including one about his experience walking the Camino de Santiago. After talking with this delightful man, we’re going to read his book!

The day went quickly, and suddenly we were in Segovia. We climbed about 2,800 feet and ridden about 40 miles and it seemed easy to both of us. I guess that means we’re getting stronger while doing this ride.

We’ve ridden 1,337 miles (2,172KM) in the 40 days since we arrived in Brittany.

Segovia is a famous city in Spain, with a 2,000 year old aqueduct one of the main highlights, built by the Romans about 50CE, stacked stone without mortar and in perfect condition two millennia later. Our hotel window looks out to the aqueduct, which is a treat.

Nice view!

We will be back in Segovia in just a few days with Katherine and Andrew, so we don’t want to see EVERYTHING but we we wandered around for a bit and had some dinner. For the second time in as many days, we got something different to eat than what we thought we ordered, but it was all very good and it’s part of the experience when in a country where you don’t speak the language!

Some shots of Segovia as night settled on the city.

The next morning before our train, we went out for coffee and a bit of something to eat. Tomorrow is our 16th wedding anniversary, and we’re spending it together in Madrid! What else could we ask for? 🙂
