A path of wine and water on the way to Trento

After yesterday‘s torrential rains, I was hoping that today would be a little bit better, but I was prepared for rain, placing all my rain gear closely accessible as I got my bike ready to go. However, the day ended up being much better than predicted with even some occasional spots of sunshine. It also seemed like it was going to be about 1100 feet of elevation gain but I think it was scarcely half that in the end.

So, a pretty easy day and I might’ve even been able to get to my next destination of Balzano if I had tried, but that was 80 miles, and I don’t think I was quite prepared for that. I guess I also need to remember that this isn’t a race and there’s no real reason for me to rush or optimize everything to make the greatest distances per day.

Today’s ride was beautiful and I enjoyed it. I was riding in a flat valley flanked by two high walls of limestone cliffs, carved by the river that runs through it. Vineyards bordered the path almost the entire way, with a river or canal nearby.

You can see from the pictures above that the rivers and canals were full! There is a pretty good size canal on the hillside above the river that seems to handle additional flows of water, but it was also right to the top edge

The ride was at a pretty casual pace today. There wasn’t any hurry, and so I stopped for coffee and a chocolate croissant at one point, and then another time sat down for a panini in another restaurant. They were all really good. I took special notice today of how many cycle tourists were riding electric bikes. I think it was at least 90%, and I probably saw at least 50 cycle tourists today.

I still made it to Trento with about an hour before I could check into my B&B at 4 PM. Trento has an old section that I toured around after I checked in. First, I took my bike thinking that the old section would be big enough that a bike would make it easier to see it all, but I realized it’s only about half a mile square so easier to do by foot. Our host at the B&B recommended a couple different restaurants so I went to one of them and had a large salad and half a pizza, saving the other half for tomorrow. You don’t starve over here!

Looks like an awesome day traveling and exploring. I’m curious how many of the other bikes you see are bike tourists like you?

    1. Today, I think I probably saw somewhere between 200-300 bicycle tourists, with panniers or bags suggesting they were on a longer trip. Quite a few today!
