Leaving Berlin

At Checkpoint Charlie

When Jay and I visited Checkpoint Charlie, there was a line of people waiting to take their pictures there, and so the next person in line was always available to take a picture of you! When I arrived at shortly after 8 o’clock in the morning today, the whole place was empty, and so I stood there hopefully and pondered how to snap a picture of me and my bike. A passing cyclist saw me, did a U-turn with a smile and came over to take my picture! That was sweet.

After getting that picture I pushed off from Berlin! It took me about 12 miles to escape the busy streets of Berlin, and then I started getting on the smaller roads and paths.

The golden goddess waved me good luck.

It’s about 235 miles between Berlin and Rostock, where I will take the ferry to Denmark. Today, I knocked off 60 miles.

The majority of the route today was through forests or along rivers/canals. Very quiet and away from everything! There were some parts where I was along roads or riding the bike path section of the sidewalk through suburban streets.

I stopped to camp in a park that was an old brickworks, which was a really cool place, and which also had a good restaurant. As usual, I was able to buy a beer during check-in and so that made me happy.

German food is heavy on meat, and this was the lightest thing on the menu.

While I was there I met Søren who is from Copenhagen, taking his first bike tour from Copenhagen to Berlin, having a great time. He was camping right next to me. I’ll see him again when I visit Copenhagen in a few days.

We set up our tents about 20 yards from a tomb of an unknown soldier from WWII. Søren told me about it in the morning. It didn’t disturb my sleep. Mosquitoes disturbed Søren’s, as he was sleeping under a rain fly with no mosquito netting.

He will cycle down to Berlin and spend a couple days there, and then take the train back to Copenhagen. I talked to him about taking the ferry from Rostock to Denmark, and he assured me that it’s no problem to just show up with a bicycle and get a spot.

That put my mind at ease and certainly gives me more flexibility with scheduling my passage to Denmark.
