From the ashes…

On December 30, 2021, a disastrous fire started just a few miles from our house in Boulder Colorado, eventually consuming almost 1,000 houses in a fast moving fire through a suburban area. Our friend Carolyn was one of the many people who lost their house, which burned to the ground. Luckily, she and her boyfriend escaped the fire, leaving the house with the clothes on their back, one car, two laptops, and their cat Billy. We immediately invited her to stay in our house for the month of January while we were planning to be gone in Arizona. That quickly expanded to became our plan to be gone for a year… We rented our house to Carolyn for the rest of 2022 and potentially beyond while her house is rebuilt.

  1. What an interesting wonderful story how all that worked out! Louisville was my childhood home. My sisters old neighborhood where she previously lived with her family completely burned down. I am glad your friends and their cat were ok.

    1. Trust you to start from the beginning of the story! Thanks for reading about the adventure – it will be more than a year when we get home for good.

  2. […] On January 2, 2002, we left our house in Boulder for 5 weeks, leaving it in the good care of our friends Carolyn and Ted. Their house was incinerated in a deadly fire a few days previously, and we invited them to live in our house while we were gone. They arrived with the clothes on their backs, their cat Billy, one car and 2 laptops. The rest of their possessions were gone. https://atravelyear.blog/2022/03/04/how-did-this-all-start/?amp=1 […]
