A plane, a truck, three trains, two bikes and a boat.

We are back in England, but not for long. After just a month in Boulder, we flew to London, arranged to have someone pick us up with our two 50-pound suitcases and our two bicycles in cases. Today we rode our bikes from Cranleigh to the train station in Guildford, and then took the train to Plymouth, where the first pilgrims departed for America, bringing that name to their new home by calling their landing spot Plymouth Rock.

The only complicated part of organizing today’s travel was getting reservations for our bikes on the train. Bike reservations are free, but capacity is limited, so we ended up having to take an earlier train with more transfers just to be able to officially take the bikes. Others with bikes seemed to ignore the rules but we didn’t want to chance not being able to take our bikes. That would have been a bad start to the trip. All our train connections worked out perfectly. ☺️

It took about 4 1/2 hours to get to Plymouth and then we had some hours to kill before our ferry so we contented ourselves with lunch and drinks and just touring the old part of the town.

We boarded the ferry about 9 PM, and the boat pulled out of the port around 10 PM. We had a little bite in the café, and then went to bed. Our cabin was pretty sweet, and we had a porthole window looking out into the ocean. The rocking motion of the boat on the waves lulled us to sleep.

  1. More great adventuring ahead!👏👏

    1. Yes sir! We are looking forward to having daily adventures and renewing that sense of awe.

  2. […] After three productive and friend/family-filled days in Liverpool, we took the train down to our friend Helene’s house in Surrey, just southwest of London. And there, up in the attic, were our suitcases we left before heading out on our 3-week bike trip which morphed into 2 1/2 months. This was the place that we left from! https://atravelyear.blog/2022/06/10/a-plane-a-truck-three-trains-two-bikes-and-a-boat/ […]
