Back home after 21 months on the road!

We always knew that we would be returning home at some point, but we were still having a good time on the road when the time came to return. We were in Lisbon and flights were booked. Our friend’s/renter’s house was rebuilt and they had moved in, so our house was empty, the rent payments…

From Auckland north: the next chapter begins!

More than a few Kiwis have apologized to us for the “weird, wet weather” that has rained from the skies for the first few days of our visit. No worries, we think…we have lots to do with picking up and setting up bikes, buying a few things and getting all our belongings to fit into…

Auckland, New Zealand! Waiting out the cyclone…

We landed to Auckland just before 1AM, and then navigated customs and immigration, including the bio-security screening that necessitated someone unfolding and examining our tent carefully for contamination before returning it to us. Hundreds were in line, so it took some time. At 3AM we got in a cab and suffered through our driver’s long-winded…

Into Orléans, and another visit to Decathlon

We started this segment of our trip in Roscoff Brittany, planning on 3-4 weeks in cool and wet conditions, cycling and maybe some hiking along the coast. Naturally, we packed for that type of weather and activity, carrying waterproof everything and clothing to keep us warm, and allowing us to hike some longer distances. And…

A hot day and more to come

We started today’s ride early, getting up at 6:00AM to try to escape the worst of the heat. It was 94 degrees (34c) today and is forecast to be over 90 for the next week, with the high temperature being about 100 (38c). We may get up earlier yet tomorrow since today passed well. It’s…

Paddle boarding in France

So, not really knowing the word for paddle board in French, I asked the chilled out server at the beach bar near the board rental place and he pursed his lips in that oh-so-French way and said “ah, le paddle-board.” So I guess that’s it, you just have to be cool and say the same…

A short day to the beach

It being our first camping day of the trip, we got moving slowly the next morning and then putz’ed around stopping at a market in Quimiac to get Chris a swimsuit (swimming costume for you Brits). Success! Pictures to come as we are at the beach today and tomorrow. We rode just 29 miles today…

BIG change to plans!

We originally planned on doing a slow tour of Brittany for 6 weeks or so, then circling back through Roscoff, taking the ferry back to Plymouth and then the train to Guildford, staying a few days there and then flying from London to Helsinki to travel with our friends there and then a few weeks…

Rennes: Into the middle of Brittany

Today, we cycled from Mont St Michel to Rennes, a distance of 50 miles with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain. The terrain was pretty easy: along rivers, through farmland and along a canal for the last 20 miles. We stitched together 2 EuroVelo routes, the V10 and the V42-V2, with some cross country navigation…

St Malo to Mont St Michel

Getting out of St Malo was the hardest part of the day! The streets are all twisty-turny and so it was hard to get pointed the right direction. But after we got going, it was pretty easy going. Today’s ride was about 42 miles with about 850 ft of climbing that was all in the…
