Rennes: Into the middle of Brittany

Today, we cycled from Mont St Michel to Rennes, a distance of 50 miles with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain. The terrain was pretty easy: along rivers, through farmland and along a canal for the last 20 miles.

We stitched together 2 EuroVelo routes, the V10 and the V42-V2, with some cross country navigation between the two suggested by GaiaGPS Maps. There is a real route (I think) but I was not able to find it.

After the last couple weeks on the north coast of Brittany, we are heading south to explore the mid-section of Brittany. We have a couple goals – one is to cycle part of a path on a canal that goes from Nantes to Brest, and the other is to cycle some on the south coast of Brittany and then circle up the coast back to Roscoff. Along the way, we’re spending a couple days in Brittany’s capital of Rennes.

A nice bike-only bridge. Note the fly fisherman on the right.

The cross country route suggested was mostly great but we had one short (1/2 mile) section of very overgrowth path! Good going Chris!

The V42 into Rennes was particularly nice as the path is right next to a canal and brought us directly into Rennes within a few hundred feet of our apartment, avoiding all traffic and cars!

Once into Rennes we were delighted by all the bike paths and lots of cyclists! And also delighted that many restaurants are open since it’s Sunday and most things are closed. Lots of people out which is nice to see after the quiet of the country. We opted for a Lebanese meal and ordered the mezze. Amazing and so full of fresh taste. The town is really cool. It’s famous for its old timbered buildings and we saw them immediately. The apartment we are staying in is located in a kind of hipster neighborhood, just a block for the old historical center. Great location.
