The route from Rennes to Redon was almost completely along a towpath with essentially no vehicles. The path was primarily crushed gravel in good condition. The route finding was simple since we just followed the canal! It was basically flat except for one detour that took us over a steep hill. The route was 57 miles long and with an elevation gain of 400 ft.
We had a steady headwind all day, getting stronger as the day progressed, and arrived in Redon around 7:45, tired and ready for glass(es) of wine and dinner. Happily, the supermarket was open and so I foraged while Chris took a shower. I scored some white from the Loire and a stellar St. Emilion, and found some Boeuf Bourguignon at the meat counter that was darn good with the potatoes we boiled. Good living.
At our coffee stop we chatted with a German couple about our age who are cycle-touring. They are on a 3-month trip. They started in Cologne, went through Switzerland, across France to Bordeaux, and then north along the coast towards Brittany. They will return along the north coast of France, through Belgium and back home to Germany. Camping the whole way and riding about 40 miles a day. Having a great time! Made us ready to camp ourselves.
