It being our first camping day of the trip, we got moving slowly the next morning and then putz’ed around stopping at a market in Quimiac to get Chris a swimsuit (swimming costume for you Brits). Success! Pictures to come as we are at the beach today and tomorrow.
We rode just 29 miles today from Saint-Molf to Pornichet, climbing a modest 750 feet, opting to have a short day on the bike so we could have more time to enjoy the beach. We’ll be leaving Brittany soon and the beach will become a memory.
We are passing lots of small stands selling salt, and shallow pans where sea water is being evaporated to get salt. There are piles of salt at the side and then areas where they collect just the top crust – the fleur de sel – a salt that forms as a thin, delicate crust on the surface of seawater as it evaporates.
We pass through Guerande in the middle of the day, which we also detour into to visit. Another stunning walled city with an amazing cathedral, and another reason that we make our riding day short. Got to remember that we’re not on a tight schedule and we don’t currently need reservations for camping.
