We started today’s ride early, getting up at 6:00AM to try to escape the worst of the heat. It was 94 degrees (34c) today and is forecast to be over 90 for the next week, with the high temperature being about 100 (38c). We may get up earlier yet tomorrow since today passed well. It’s nice that cycling creates its own breeze. We also had a good deal of shade on the route.

The trip today included a long section on a road that is perched on top of an earthen dike. The Loire river is generally shallow and has relatively low flows normally but experiences flooding in times of intense rain. So the dikes are about 30’ high to contain the flood waters.

We saw several hundred cycle tourists today! More than ever before. We’ve seen dozens of families touring together with 2-3 kids. Seems like a cool way to have an active adventure. Didn’t hear too much whining so they must be having an ok time! Parents carry the heavy load and kids carry something unless they are too little.
