We took the bus into Besançon today to give our legs a break. It’s a short distance but uphill on the way back! Speaking of the bus…the whole ticketing system is cool and touchless. You tell the driver what you want (for us a day pass) and then we tapped our watch to pay using Apple Pay. The system in the bus records the purchase and your credit card info. So in every subsequent bus, you just touch your watch to a reader on the bus and it approves you since you have a day pass. While we were riding the bus, a number of fare enforcement people came on, each with a scanner. They scan your record (for us the watch) and it tells them we paid. Really cool.
We visited the hilltop citadel that we saw on the way in. From there, the walk along the ramparts gave us amazing views in all directions.

Besançon is lovely, with an amazing cathedral and a famous clock. We missed seeing the clock due to some bus scheduling mishaps. Oh well…next time! The streets are full of interesting buildings, all well preserved.

One of the highlights of the visit to the citadel was a koi pond, so we lingered watching the cousins of our fish at home. Loved seeing them and watching kids enjoy them as well.
