Today was amazing. As we left in the cool of the morning, we were immediately flanked by limestone cliffs and outcroppings. Keep in mind that’s a good deal of our riding to date has been pretty flat terrain or rolling but not with any canyons to cycle through. The trail today first meandered in the flat valley floor surrounded by hills and then tucked into forest paths climbing or descending hills. So it was exciting and very picturesque. The castles on the top of ridges didn’t hurt the effect either.
The Danube at this point is a fairly small river, growing in size as it moves east. The Danube goes through Vienna and Bratislava (our final destination), and is a large river by that point.

We also passed a non-random castle named Sigmaringen Castle…it’s hard to describe how it feels to just be riding along on your bike and then to come across something as grand as this, appearing like an apparition in your peripheral vision until it snaps into reality.
Road markers have changed again and I mention it again since we rely on these to help us navigate. Yes, we have GPS tracks on our phone but the trail seems to be continually being improved and so the road markers really help.
And finally we get tonight campground. It’s a horse ranch/farm with lots of horses and an older kinda eccentric older couple who have a campsite in the side. The gentleman doesn’t speak a word of anything but German but he’s obviously pleased to be telling me whatever he is telling me as I pay him the €16 for the night. His wife translates a few crucial bits of information but generally it’s all smiles between us.
We have now been to a number of these campgrounds which are small private affairs. They seem more personal and interesting than the larger commercial ones that have pools and bouncy castles. Hopefully we will find more of them in the future.
