Bee and wasp stings…but still moving. And Ulm was great!

Yesterday, Chris got a bee stuck in her helmet strap while riding along at a good clip and it stung the back of her ear lobe. Ouch!!! (I know exactly where it was since I pulled the stinger out with my fingernails.) In the ensuing frenzy to get the bee out and stop the pain, Chris heroically managed to stay upright on the bike, throwing her helmet off to the side of the road in the process, but pulled a muscle in her chest with the wild motions. For a while, that hurt as much as the sting. The previous day she got stung by a wasp on her right palm. So now her hand, her ear and the left side of her face are red and swollen. Luckily, she had a bee/wasp sting neutralizer swab in her first aid kit so we applied it promptly and it seems to have helped! That was the last one so we got some more bee venom neutralizers this morning at the pharmacy.

The last two days we rode 95 miles, encountering some cool stuff but also a number of diversions for road construction.

Riedlingen to Ulm to Danauworth

Of course there’s some construction no matter where we are but the last couple days had more than a normal share. It’s been hot again with yesterday’s temperature being 97F and today somewhat cooler at 91F. It’s going to rain tonight so the temperature will fall to 78F. Welcome relief!

Our route was along the Danube, with the terrain getting flatter over the last couple days. By the way, we are now officially Rad! (Rad means bike in German.) We are radlers (cyclists), staying in radplatz (places for cyclists), and following radnetz (cycle network.) We are so rad…

With all the excitement yesterday, we rode about 39 miles and spent the night in Ulm, which was an unexpectedly great place. The city is lovely and the camp site was just across the bridge from the old town. The camping area was part of a paddling club and it had everything including cold beer. It was pretty much all bike tourists and members of the club. We went out to dinner in the historic old part of town ( the part not bombed by the Americans, I was reminded by our host). The restaurant was just on the edge of a canal and it was hopping! Good food and wine. We had pizza, salad and a bottle of wine.

The salad, with disks of goat cheese. Forgot to photograph the pizza but it was good too!

The cathedral is imposing, having the highest steeple in world! We tried to go to the top but the top 2 levels were closed.

The cathedral makes an impression. The proportions are all attenuated to maximize height. Beautiful space inside. A skyscraper to God.

And finally, proof that the best in life can be hell. Hell in this case was cold and it was good!

  1. Stephen wants to join you for September ; ) As long as beer is involved! Love the name of the beer.

    1. We’re not riding in September but maybe that’s even better for Stephen’s beer desires!

  2. Hey! Bee stings, wasp stings, 97 degree temperatures all topped of with Hell. Let the good times roll! 😎🌵

    1. That’s funny!

  3. Ugh. I got stung on my chin last week while walking Bella. Very ouchy.
Glad Chris didn’t wreck getting the helmet off.
