Lake Dunstan Bike Trail

Since way before we came to NZ, I ran across a video of the Lake Dunstan Bike trail. It is part of the “Great Rides” of NZ, and it’s gotten a lot of press since being finished a couple years ago. Last year, 7,500 people were expected to ride it. 87,000 did. So, it’s a hit.

It’s a 44km ride from Cromwell to Clyde along Lake Dunstan, with some of the trail suspended over the lake. And so, it makes for adventurous riding and great pictures.

It was 42 degrees when we woke up, but it warmed quickly. Jay rented a bike and we took our own, but we only had to ride one-way, since we arranged for a shuttle on the way back from the bike rental place.

Just before heading out.

It’s a fairly easy trail, and most of the bikes were e-bikes. Some riders doing the Sound to Sound long distance route were doing it, going the opposite direction as us, laden down with camping gear like we were just a few days ago. I’ll be doing 10 days of that ride on my way to Christchurch when Chris heads back to Brisbane, before I join her over there.

I apologize for the length of the video at nearly 5 minutes, but it was all so fun that I had a hard time cutting out too much more.

Anyway, it was a great ride!

  1. Looks like the trip of a lifetime!

  2. I was wondering how you did all the videoing and in this post I hear you say that you’re holding the camera in your hand. So fortunate that you didn’t crash your bike while taking photos. Or just drop off a bridge or down a steep bank.
